So there's dragon nip. That's like cat nip to dragons. Sometimes the teenagers eat it. It's a thing.
So basically this is Hiccup FINDS ALL HIS FRIENDS DRUGGED TO HIGH HEAVEN. And at first he's trying to wrangle them home, but then the dragons are drugged, and everyone says he needs to relax and he says fine, WHATEVER.
And that's how the Dragon academy spent a Thor's Day high as Hel and woke up the next day with some swapped clothes and chicken bones EVERYWHERE.

Meaning
SO. This memory is super important. Because Hiccup is the one who injured Toothless and it has been a point of guilt for a while. And the thing is, with that guilt, Hiccup always felt like he owed Toothless and it meant SO MUCH when Toothless came back because it meant Toothless did want to be his friend and it wasn't out of necessity. But still, the tail is a point of GUILT, and all his inventions for it have been to make up for it.
Then Toothless broke the automated tail.
Which is Toothless saying that if Hiccup isn't with him, he doesn't WANT to fly. It's a sign that Toothless forgave Hiccup completely, that he chooses to be with him, they are equals and friends and they don't owe each other anything.
Something rider didn't know, and the guilt has been eating away at him. Especially since he's been wondering what happened to that tail. He wouldn't have expect this because he's a cynic, but it will be good. It'll make him feel better about himself, more confident in his relationship with Toothless (and miss him more), but it also shows him he can right his own wrong.
